This video was filmed in my studio March 11, 2024, and shows samples of the countless painted studies I have accumulated over the years. I keep them in a series of baskets scattered around my studio, and it's fun for me to flip through them occasionally. I would wager that most painter's work-time is spent on paintings that never see the light of day, or at least leave their studio. Whether for practice or pleasure, painting studies on regular basis is the "meat-and-potatoes" of growing as an artist. Like keeping a sketchbook, it's great to work without the pressure of thinking a piece is gallery bound. That said, sometimes collectors visit my studio and fall in love with these informal studies, or I realize a study is gallery-worthy, and into a frame it goes.
